Overall, it was a good night. Tonight, the contenders put on a good show. Tony Bennett mentored the contestants well.

Blake Lewis was the first to perform, he opened the show with the song “Mack the Knife”. Paula said “Tonight you personified pizzazz, you’re a hip cat”. He was good to say the least.
Phil Stacey sang “Night and Day”. The judges didn’t like his rendition. Simon had harsh words, saying that the song was more like for the funeral parlor. I think otherwise. Though it may not be my most favorite song that he has sung, I can truly say that this is the best vocal display that he has given so far. Besides, he willfully dedicated this romantic song to his wife, and he definitely will score a lot of points just for that.
Melinda Doolittle sang a George Gershwin classic “I Got Rhythm“, Once again, she sang like a pro, and it wasn’t hard for Randy Jacksonto say “You give everyone here a lesson in singing”. I couldn’t agree more.
Chris Richardson sang Duke Ellington’s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore“. He got some good comments from the judges. Simon thought it was very believable (whatever that meant). All I know is, he made a really good youthful spin on an old song. I liked listening to it.
Jordin Sparks sang “On A Clear Day“, and it was really a clear night for her as she had good comments from the judges. Let’s just hope that those comments translate into votes.
Gina Glocksen sang “Smile” written by Charlie Chaplin. Even if the song’s message is to smile inspite and despite of everything, I think it was way off the usual songs that we would expect Gina to sing. It was too mellow, and lonely, I think it would be hard for her to earn some votes this week.
Sanjaya Malakar sported a clean look with his nicely combed hair and sang “Cheek to Cheek” , even hd a 30-second dancing stint with Paula. I don’t think Sanjaya will leave this week as the public is slowly digging his charm, he’s no longer just a novelty that the public wants to pick on.
Haley Scarnato sang “Ain’t Misbehavin“. While she has better vocals than Sanjaya, I think she is still banking on her flesh (body) to rake in votes. So, let’s just see where her great legs will take her.
LaKisha Jones ended the show with the song “Stormy Weather” and garnered really good reviews from the judges. Simon Cowell specifically said “That was a sassy, great performance”.
