American Idol Top 7 (Performance Night)

This week was mentored by one of the biggest country singers in America, Martina McBride.

Phil Stacey was the first one to go on stage singing “Where the Blacktop Ends”. Martina commented during the rehearsals that the first part of his singing sounded a little stiff, but it was soulful towards the end. Martina admits that she loved Phil’s voice since the beginning of AI. Talking about his rendition in the performance night, I’d say it was good. His voice suits country music. Nice black long sleeves… Randy said he ought to have a career in country music.

Jordin Sparks sang “Broken Wing”. Randy said that was “the bomb”, which translate to a praise. Simon said that “this is the first time that I think you can win this competition”. Jordin sounded really good, but I’m afraid it was just too boring. But if all country fans put in their votes for Jordin, she will be safe.

Sanjaya Malakar sang “Let’s Give ‘Em Something To Talk About”. Yeah people, I think he’s finally getting the kick of all the Sanjaya frenzy, and he’d like to show it on stage. But sorry, I think he just did the worst (note: WORST!!!) version of the song. It was sung before by Fantasia and Kellie Pickler, and they were so much better. Simon said it was utterly horrendous (so true!). I’ve been trying to like Sanjaya already these past few weeks, but please, tonight’s performance was just way off (out of tune, out of beat, off). Now, more than ever, he really does deserve to be the “vote for the worst” pick.

Lakisha Jones sang “Jesus Takes the Wheel” which is a song that she can very much connect to. She can very much take the song from Carrie Underwood now, the song simply fits her so well. But the judges thought otherwise, not a single appreciation whatsoever. For me, she sounded so good. Bless You, Kiki.

Chris Richardson sang a Rascal Flatts song “Mayberry”. Martina thinks he’s versatile, someone who can juggle pop and country. He fits the song well too. Randy said he sang okay but he didn’t see the connection. Simon said it was completely and utterly insignificant.

Melinda Doolittle sang “Trouble is a Woman”. Martina said she was amazing. On tonight’s show, her appearance was definitely better, she doesn’t look old (thanks to her outfit and hair extensions). Her song was something unfamiliar but still Melinda sang it well, and made it lovable. Randy said that it was another solid performance from the resident pro. Well said, Randy.

Blake Lewis sang “When the Stars Grow Blue” and made it his own. Beautiful arrangement and rendition, I must say. Girls will get “Blaked” be hysterical once again.

Results in a few hours…hang on. :-) :-) :-)
